In recent months I've been reevaluating my wardrobe, big time.

Color scares me and I'm finally coming to terms with the fact that I'm just never going to wear dresses on a regular basis (it's jeans and t's all day err'day around here, folks). I used to buy some cheap bits like plaid skirts and tea dresses to try and mix it up, but they just always end up at the back of the dresser drawer and for the past few years my everyday uniform has turned into black skinny jeans, gray sweaters, and ankle boots.

Not to say that there's anything wrong with that at all, but I was getting a bit bored. Partly due to the fact that I wore the same black jeans every single day; partly due to the fact that I kept thinking I needed to wear more interesting clothes and was frustrated that I didn't have anything I actually wanted to wear.

Over the past few months I've really been trying to hone in on my "personal style" outside of this idea of being stuck to a "uniform" and figuring out a way to own the staple basics look without feeling quite so bland. I've scoured Pinterest and Instagram for hours on end looking for inspiration, and have discovered three ladies who have become my go-to for style inspo on the daily.

Photo from EJ Style

EMMA HILL

The most recent of my girl style crushes, Emma's Instagram has become my daily go-to for outfit envy. Her outfits are a mix-and-match of t-shirts or button-downs, cropped straight leg or skinny jeans, blazers or leather jackets, and footwear ranging from sneakers to heels to espadrilles and a dress here and there in between. She finds versatile pieces that rotate out in different combinations, and in comparing her individual items to my own I've found that I can replicate a lot of her outfits with what I already have. I just added a few more pairs of non-skinny blue jeans and it's breathed new life into my outfit variety. I'm also obsessed with the fact that she has 5 dogs and her husband wears the most ridiculous clothing combinations (think: multicolored striped top with tropical print shorts and statement socks) and she just rolls with it looking stylish as all hell.

Photo from Arielle

ARIELLE VANDENBERG

I first discovered Arielle when I chopped my hair short about a year and a half ago, and she's still the photo I bring in to my hairdresser every single time I get a trim. I love her messy, laid back style and am awed with how she can still make everyday look sexy. She's usually in jeans and a tee with converse or black boots, a leather jacket, and pulling some incredible faces while lip synching on Snapchat. Also she's a fan of overalls, so that's always a win in my book.

Photo from Anine's World

ANINE BING

There's a series of photos for Anine's clothing line in which she and Arielle are literally twins. So, no wonder I caught onto her fast. Anine is a former model and owns her own line so obviously knows her shit. Her style's a little more of a mature take than the other two, but I like looking to her for workwear inspiration. Since my industry is very lax on dress code I can totally get away with ripped jeans and sneakers at work, but also love bringing in some of Anine's sophistication like tailored cuts on top or heels for the office.

As you can see, all of these ladies sort of run the same course in terms of simple, laid back style but still looking put together and very stylish. They continue to show that basic isn't boring, and I'm slowly picking up on how to work with styling up simple pieces in a way that's both stylish and fun for everyday dress!

Dare I say, it's finally spring?! Actually, for San Francisco, this weather we've been having is better than in summer! Highs in the sixties, a good dose of sunshine to burn off the fog, and cherry trees in full-bloom have me swooning over this city once again.

As we emerge from hardcore sweater weather I've been obsessed with finding new pieces to add to my spring/summer wardrobe. Not to mention I'm super bored of my current closet (lots of outfits with the same pair of black Jamie jeans, a variety of gray sweaters, and the occasional stripe). I'm really into the idea of experimenting more with my personal style. Quirky cute details (like on this tasseled sweater I just got) and girlier details (pink, polka dots, patterns!) have really been catching my eye lately. I think in my ideal life I'd pair more feminine and structured pieces with grungier accents like distressed boyfriend jeans and my chunky black heeled boots and a leather jacket... The tasteful mix-and-match is the overall look I'm ultimately honing in on.

While my wallet can't fulfill all of these dreams quite yet (it's currently in recovering mode from booking my trip to Bali in June... 100% worth it!), I thought I'd share what I've been lusting after in case you've got a case of springtime shopaholicism too. Links below!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Hey, it's been a while. Let's just jump right into things. Last year I tried to cut back on unnecessary spending (aka makeup and fun things – but perhaps the only positive in this list), moved into a room that was windowless and uninspiring (I now realize I feed a lot of my energy through my environment), and generally stressed myself out over work, projects, and stupidly impossible attempts at getting rid of a slight muffin top in four days or less (there is no miracle cure). All of these things pushed my personal creativity out the window. And I one-hundred percent forgot I have a blog.

Now, I never have been and likely never will be an extremely committed, dedicated blogger. However, I do need to tap back into writing, photos, anything to whir my creativity up again to keep myself accountable for living a life that celebrates the small, from a new lipstick to rediscovering a platform for sappy self-reflection.

This is all a long, rambling intro into my 2017 goals. I have one word that sums it up: mindful.

I want to be more mindful in all that I do. I want to take care of my body, so have started incorporating different exercises hoping that I can stick to some activity and still put off joining a gym (because I really never want to have to do that). I want to take care of my relationships, so am going to try to train the social anxiety out of my system and commit to spending more quality time with friends. I've discovered that I'm inspired by certain bloggers and their journey helps my journey. Like purchasing cookbooks to help guide me in diversifying my diet, cutting out more pasta (my ultimate go-to lazy meal) and being more conscious about trying new foods. I bought and cooked fennel last week. I'd never even noticed fennel in the grocery store before then!

So instead of making a long list of goals that my mundane lifestyle would not support ("get six-pack abs," "make new friends out of the blue," etc.), I am hoping that consciously being more mindful will allow these things to occur naturally. It's a lifestyle change that I'm seeing results from already, and I hope will truly encompass the upcoming year.

And, hey, maybe this will even get me off my butt and take some pictures of the ungodly Sephora haul I indulged myself in last month... We'll see (;

Last weekend I came down with a little bug and spent the week trying to repeat the "mind over matter" mantra and convince myself (and everyone at work) that I'm not sick. I just can't seem to kick this nasty lingering cough, but it's not going to stop me from making the most out of my weekend. There are too many cafes that need sitting at and boutiques to be shopped in!

1. I've got this little side project called Chasing Spraypaint that I've been slowly but surely growing over the past year or so. Street art is one of my favorite things in life, and it's how I've come to navigate cities and familiarize myself with neighborhoods all over the world. It's gotten to the point where I can accurately Google Map navigate you through cities to some of my favorite pieces. Weird, I know. This weekend I was able to get out in my own city and discover pieces by fnnch, Caratoes, and Meggs out in North Beach which was a definite highlight to my month thus far. I've missed going out on art adventures!

2. To tie into that last note, I was feeling well inspired post-street art tour of SF's Little Italy, so when I came home I finally brought out my first stencil I'd worked on a few months ago to put it to the test. I'm actually pretty happy with how my jackalope (#ultimatespiritanimal) turned out in my Moleskine, but I don't think I'm quite ready to take it out into the real world yet.

3. My best friend (and roommate) is suffering through a weekend in hell down in Havasu because the bride who asked her to be the maid of honor is sabotaging her own bachelorette weekend. She spent too much time and effort planning for the bride to throw a weekend-long grumpy fit tantrum... so I'm prepping a little welcome home kit for her today for when she comes back, foil balloon and all!

4. I'm really craving a wardrobe update, but I can't quite figure out what I'm looking for. Not even ASOS can provide me with inspiration (I know, the horror!). I have been eyeing up these adorable oxfords though – unsure if I can pull them off, but they'd be so perfect for comfy-casual work days!

5. After postponing my bi-monthly grocery run by an extra week and a half (things got real rough in the kitchen... like, potato chips became my daily serving of "vegetable") I finally have a decently stocked fridge! I think I'm going to attempt this yummy looking Broccoli Quinoa Casserole to take to lunch this week.Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-2223666268482562282016-07-03T18:49:00.002-07:002016-07-03T23:07:22.520-07:00Five Good Things

Hellooo to the long weekend and some solid sunshine! It's amazing how much warmer it gets when you head just an hour out of San Francisco. Makes me seriously question why I've been suffering through the temps in the sixties lately.

01. I hadn't really spent much time coming back to my parent's house since moving to the city last November, but I've been able to come down a few times in the past month and am now spending Fourth of July weekend here. It feels good to get some quality parent time in, even though it means putting up with the reality that my mom has completely converted my room into her quilting studio and my dad has an endless supply of pent-up dad jokes he unleashes when I'm home... The world-class BBQ makes up for it though.

02. As much as I enjoy work (most of the time), and pitching is always an interesting and rewarding process, the news that I'm off the hook for the weekend and the Tuesday after the Fourth takes so much pressure off! I can sip my weekend wine in peace.

03. I laid outside on a blanket and finally started Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch today. Vitamin D + a new book + sunshine = the makings of a happy camper. Minus the camping.

04. Worth the wait... and the splurge? After many harrowed attempts I finally got my little paws on the overalls of my dreams! A little pricey, but so, so excited to start styling these babies!

05. Ummm, can we talk about Logic's new mixtape?

How are y'all spending the Fourth?

Hello, hey there, it's been a while. That's usually how these comeback posts go, isn't it? I swear I can't keep anything up super long term, but I do keep coming back to blogging. I wish I would keep up with it more but combined with crazy long work weeks, relocating into a room with zero natural light, and trying to finally finish Season 4 of Orange is the New Black (hah! I'm almost there!!), the time and dedication I wish I could put into blogging is just not there.

I've been trying new makeup bits here and there, but that's not really what I want to write about, I guess. Lately I've been loving trying out new styles of clothes/shoes (super inspired by my recent trip to Berlin), digging deeper into my graphic design, and truly falling in love with San Francisco. San Francisco – now that's a topic I'm happy to discuss! This city is small, but mighty. Filled to the brim so many hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems... I mean come on, just look at those tastefully painted Victorians in NoPa and tell me it isn't your dream to live in one of them. The coffee is strong, and very, very competitive in its culture (you do not want to get caught in a battle over Ritual v. Four Barrel); the hills are steep, but climb the right one and you may catch a glimpse of City Hall's majestic dome, or Karl the Fog rolling in through the Sunset; the food is pricy but so worth the wait, and yeah, it may be a little overrated, but a weekend spent at the Marina in a sweatshirt in the middle of July is just the way we like it. See? I could probably write about how much I love the city all the time. Would you all mind if I gushed about San Francisco forever?

I think I was so caught up in the idea of preserving some weird ideal of a beauty blog; however, that's never going to be the real focus because I don't dedicate enough time to beauty, period. What I do want to do is to break away from that and start blogging again for myself. This is, at its core, a platform to be creative and that means posting all of the pictures and words that I want, to explore interests of my own that others may stumble upon and share as well.

So. That was overly dramatic and probably poorly written (don't judge me, I just woke up from a nap). But maybe posting this will get me back into Salt & Sail a little smidge at a time. These are my thoughts from this Sunday in San Francisco.Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-18953735453567385472016-02-24T08:00:00.000-08:002016-02-24T08:00:11.894-08:00LORAC Color Source Buildable Blush - Chroma

Do you ever walk into a store and feel an inexplicable pull toward some random thing and know that you're going to end up buying whatever it is? While my wallet may not like this sixth sense, I'm pretty impressed by my skills.

A few weeks ago I took an (unfortunately) unimpressed swoop through my new Ulta, which was a let down because I was so excited to have finally found a local one after moving back in November. However, despite my dejection, right before heading out I did an unintentional little double-take at the far corner that was filled with LORAC's newest releases. The pretty little faces on this beautiful gunmetal packaging drew me in and I tried to walk away but couldn't resist swatching their new Color Source Buildable Blush in this shade called Chroma. LORAC calls it a "berry matte" shade; I'd say it leans a little more orchid/lavender than berry but it's definitely a color unique to what I've realized is in my collection abundant in much peachier shades. In that moment I envisioned myself prancing through meadows (or, more realistically, stomping downtown on my way to work) on a crisp spring morning and looking freshly flushed wearing this blush. Aaaaand, sold! Thanks to my imagination and some great packaging.

Upon swatching I found the formula to be very soft and very pigmented. I just need to tap my brush very lightly when applying, and buffing it in makes it all the more melt-into-the-skin beautiful. This color immediately brightens up my face and gives off this healthy, happy glow even though it's a matte formula. Though only I can probably tell, I love the subtle difference this blue-toned shade brings to my everyday routine. Now I'm even more curious to see what the true purple shades from this collection would look like... but I may have to wait until after pay day to go take another peek at Ulta. We all know how those trips end up *insert flying money emoji here $$$*. For now, Chroma is my go-to spring fling and I'm positive it will be on heavy rotation well into the year!Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-73611595524780374122016-02-15T18:21:00.002-08:002016-02-15T18:21:47.213-08:00Marc Jacobs Daisy Delight

It's been feeling a lot like summer in San Francisco (actually, it's been warmer than most days in July as far as I can remember!) and that's the perfect excuse to transition from my warm, cozy vanilla-toned perfumes into spring scents and I am pretty excited about it. Like it's packaging, Marc Jacobs Daisy Delight is light, feminine, and playful. A mix of apple, quince flower and freesia combined with more floral tones of iris, gardenia and peony make Daisy Delight a really fresh and upbeat scent. And you know I won't like a perfume unless there's a little hint of muskiness, so I love how it closes out with musk, cedar and sandalwood for that little extra edge. While it smells lovely, unfortunately the lasting power is not the greatest on my skin. However, it's a great pick-me-up scent to spritz on throughout the day when you feel like you're melting in your spoiled San Francisco February. What fragrances are you looking forward to bring out in the spring?Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-57701426291718060712016-02-08T08:00:00.000-08:002016-02-08T08:00:00.146-08:00Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua

My motto for 2016 is minimal matters. I will admit, until a few years ago I was an avid thing-displayer, over-decorator, and general hoarder of useless stuff, but in recent months (maybe years?) I've grown to love the art of simplicity. Same goes for my makeup.

I used to think that my skin needed as much help as it could get so I opted for heavy coverage foundations to try and achieve ultimate pore-fection. Looking back at my naive habits, it probably did more damage than delivery. I was never happy with any of the results I got, and now that I think about it, it's probably because I was just wearing too much. That's not to say I don't still seek a bit of help evening out my skin tone and covering the redness, but I've realized I have pretty decent skin (thank the lawd, knock on wood) so I don't need that much product on my face... And that's why this little sucker is finally getting the rave review it deserves.

The Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundation has long been natural-beauty loving YouTube gurus' staple foundation (think: Fleur de Force, Allison Anderson, Vivianna Does Makeup, etc.). It took me a while to come around to listening to their sage advice but I'm officially on the bandwagon and nothing can bring me down! The foundation is marketed as an ultra-light skin perfecting fluid that creates an "exquisite makeup experience." Truer words have never been spoken. I enjoy every bit of putting this on, from shaking it up (so satisfying to hear it mixing) to running a few lines down my fingers, dotting it on my face and rubbing it in to achieve that sheer, yet buildable, second skin. It just morphs into the perfect texture to tame the oilier areas without irritating the dry patches. You can't really tell that I'm wearing anything, which is a true testament to its greatness. Now when I try to wear anything like my Tarte Amazonian Clay 24 Hour Full Coverage foundation it feels like my skin is suffocating... I'm a changed woman!

The lasting power is decent enough, but since it doesn't look like I'm wearing much of anything anyway I'm not too mad about it having worn off by the end of the work day. I just like that it does enough to blur away the unevenness in my skin tone and gives me a fresh-faced confidence boost. The fact that it's a Chanel product also makes me feel instantly classier as I use it. Putting on my makeup in the morning feels like such a treat, and I'm finally happy to minimize the unnecessary makeup application and stick to the impeccable rule, "less is always more."Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-22085218253537991162016-02-04T08:00:00.000-08:002016-02-04T08:00:03.158-08:00LINKS I LOVED 01/16

In lieu of a makeup favorites post I bring to you a list of links I've loved in January! There is so much going around the web all the time I find it difficult to connect with sites and stories, but there are always a few I go back to, or even find necessary to Pin or Tweet... or feature on the ole blog. Welcome to what's been on my mind this month:

Kat from With Love From Kat's effortless sophistication has been my current style inspiration (especially for wearing trendy items like some cheeky thigh-high suede boots!).

I've been feeling a little Pinterest-y and decided to test my hand at some modern embroidery. My current project is a recreation of Marigold + Mars' "Hell Yes" hoop for my room.

I absolutely love this site's design and description of Why Time Flies. It's a fascinating take on something I think about quite often.

This is for those who appreciate a little italiano! Not sure why I find this so funny but this article on brand names spelled as they are pronounced in Italian really got me thinking I've got to get back to studying la lingua. I can't help but chuckle at "Scaip" and "UAIRD."

And lastly, who doesn't appreciate a healthy serving of Drake on Cake?

It's a mismatched compilation of things, but these really are my standout internet discoveries from the past month! Let me know if you've come across anything interesting lately, I'm always looking to be surprised.
It's officially February. Scary, isn't it? The first month of the year is already done and gone. Queue spontaneous retail therapy trip to the drugstore to cope with the fact that 2016 is rushing by and I'm starting to feel the stress of the forthcoming seasonal limbo.

I don't remember making a conscious change, but in the new year my tastes seem to be shifting in favor of more minimalistic makeup. Bye bye to full-coverage foundation and hello to a more freckle-faced embrace. Gone are the days when I attempted to "contour my crease" with eyeshadow (whatever the hell I thought that meant), and cheers to single-wash colors on the lids... Though I just can't let go of my shit tons of black mascara.

The thing I love about wearing more subtle makeup is that I can really play up my mood with a bold or bare lip. When I feel like wearing a pretty, classic look I've been enjoying a sweet little swipe of NYX Butter Gloss in Crème Brulee. It's a no-fuss, everyday nude that moisturizes like hell (though a little sticky) and wears well with any look. On the complete opposite spectrum, my recent go-to has become a vampy statement lip. I don't know where this utter obsession came from (especially from a girl who doesn't like to bring attention to herself and cannot be bothered to reapply anything ever), but the NYX Butter Lipstick in Moonlit Night has become a solid staple in my weekly routine. Like, I get excited at night thinking about applying it the next morning. Weird? Obsessive? Hm... whatever. It seriously goes on like a dream – super creamy, opaque, doesn't budge, lasts forever (I mean like 3+ cups of tea and still going strong forever), and when it fades it does so very evenly. My past life dreams of being a badass gothic rebel are being truly fulfilled by this shade and I don't think I ever want to go back.

Anything exciting you from the drugstore lately?Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-58048818610789430052015-12-10T08:00:00.000-08:002015-12-10T08:00:09.769-08:00OGX Kukuí Oil Shampoo + Conditioner

Winter is the bane of my existence. For a girl who suffers from dry skin and eczema, the winds turning cold can only mean brace yourself. I'm prone to eczema breakouts along my hairline and at the nape of my neck which is not only unsightly but painful, and really concerning when my hair even seems to be thinning out there (sorry if it's TMI but eczema-prone girls, ya feel me).

When prescription shampoo just wasn't enough, I realized I probably needed to inject way more moisture into my haircare routine which is when I came across the OGX Kukuí Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. As a longtime lover of moroccan and argan oils for the hair, this new Hawaiian secret remedy sounded just up my alley! Plus it promises to hydrate and defrizz, which is necessary when you live in the land of fog and frizzballs.

This stuff is seriously no joke. About a week into using it my hair was sleeker, shinier, and overall so much healthier than when I was using the Pantene Aqua Light. The frizz levels are down, and so are the eczema breakouts! This not only nourishes the hair but moisturizes my scalp without causing any unnecessary oiliness (I can get through two days without dry shampoo and make it through a third day with). I've put this through major use before reviewing (I'm almost out of the shampoo), and both products have been standout finds in giving my hair and scalp the care and attention it needs. It's super affordable, super effective, and they're always doing deals at the drugstore. I can't recommend it enough! I'm curious to see what other hair goodies OGX offers... is there anything else you'd recommend I check out when I have to restock?
November is a bit too early to deck the halls and for the Christmas tunes to populate my playlist, but if there's anything you can do to get ready for the upcoming holiday season it's to — of course, my favorite activity — shop.

I realized the countdown to holiday office party season is closing in (the mental calendar is just flipping by) and had a mini crisis last week... What am I going to wear?! I'm tired of toting around the same LBD to every semi-formal event that crosses my calendar, and it's my first office holiday party ever (...and I've heard it's a pretty major deal — yay big girl job perks) so naturally I hit the web in search of some buyable inspiration.

After hours of poring over hundreds (probably thousands) of dresses online I decided my pick of the season would be the ASOS Gold and Navy Sparkle Mesh Dress (it seems to be popular so may be out of stock for a while, but in true ASOS fashion they randomly restock select sizes so keep checking back - that's how I scored mine!). It's perfect. But in my search I came across a lot of other beautiful options so I thought I would round up some of my favorite runner-up contenders for The Holiday Dress Hunt 2K15 (and click through to shop). Enjoy!

Confession: I am notoriously bad at keeping up a skincare regimen (or anything that requires constant doing, really). However, having returned to the land of fog, being in a more polluted area, and generally starting to feel the winter cold my skin is not very happy. I skipped a few days of my "routine" (or the attempts at making it so) last week and am still feeling #majorregrets, but that must also mean these products are doing their job quite well.

The Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate had gotten a lot of hype a little while back, but I wasn't too keep on trying it as my skin went through a major crisis trying to establish a balance between too dry and too oily. It's settled on a combination of oily t-zone and dry cheeks/forehead which is just great for all things face-related (insert the biggest eye-roll of life here) so I was a bit hesitant about using an oil, but man oh man is this stuff magical. After one night of using a sample packet I saw radiance in my skin, a smoother surface overall, and not too much excess in the oil department (it's actually a bit on the drier side of oils), completely transforming my life in one use. Now I hate missing a day of using this because my skin just doesn't feel as luxurious and pampered... Not to mention I just adore the little blue bottle and the mini pipette!

Along with the full size night oil purchase I was talked into trying the Ultra Face Cream, which seems to be a Kiehl's cult classic. It's a nice, thick consistency moisturizer that melts into the skin and plumps it up without feeling heavy or greasy. I usually slather this on before bed, but have also relied on it to help prevent major flaking before applying makeup if I'm having an extra dry skin day, and always use some after taking a scalding hot shower (which is generally how I roll because homegirl has zero circulation in her extremities).

While I've still got a good chunk of the Midnight Recovery Concentrate to go through, I'm almost out of the Ultra Face Cream and am keen on trying a new moisturizer out. I've heard things about Antipodes that have peaked my interest, but I'm not sure if there are other good ones I'm missing out on... Any recommendations?Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-56116152382537077882015-11-14T09:08:00.003-08:002015-11-14T20:01:04.414-08:00Just a Girl and the City
Amidst a few more late night new biz pitches at work, a whirlwind rush to score an apartment in the city, and settling into living on my own again, the past few weeks have turned my life upside down and completely around. I've still got a few loose ends to tie up and some boxes to unpack, but I'm in a good place starting out the life I've dreamed of in the City by the Bay. I've already found a neighborhood cafe and located my nearest bus stops to take me downtown, and those are two of the most important keys to a successful move - right?

My makeup collection is now housed in a dresser drawer and I'm planning to finish styling my "vanity" area with a huge mirror after a Saturday morning roomie trip to IKEA. I'm trying to be budget-friendly and plan out my meals in advance (that means a LOT of eggplant parm next week), and hopefully start blogging again. I've got a few new bits I want to share and a lot more free time on my hands now! Keep your eyes peeled for some new content soon (:Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-41651440354560957372015-10-09T11:56:00.002-07:002015-10-09T12:00:26.931-07:00Little Autumn Haul

Confession: I went for a cheeky little shop. I couldn't help it, really, seeing as cozy knits are filling store windows (and I work smack dab in the middle of the city's shopping district — lunch break spending sprees are inevitable).

I'm absolutely in LOVE with this rust colored H&M knit sweater I picked up seeing as it brightens up my otherwise all-black colder weather wear. It's well-made for being only $20 and I love how it's a slouchy bat-wing with side slits and a longer back but looks so put together! It might be a little burnt-orange overload but I just had to pick up this awesome geometric Zara scarf for this season too. Last year I picked up a black-and-white grid print blanket scarf from Zara that quickly became my winter staple, so this is my pick for this year!

Fate is probably the word I'd use for my last purchase, this gorgeous pair of black leather loafers that were only $22 (I LOVE SALE SEASON) from the Gap. After absolutely ruining my black flats on European cobblestone two springs ago I've been on a hunt to replace them but nothing fit quite right. These are the most comfortable, soft and stretchy flats with structure and class to go with any outfit. Perfect for work and perfect for play, they are some of the most-worn shoes in my bunch already!

My A/W wishlist is far from fulfilled, as I'm still looking for some more knit pieces, a gray wool A-line dress, and some cute hats, but I'm quite happy with my latest finds so far! What are you looking to haul this season?

You know the drill. Grab yourself a cup of coffee, pull on your coziest socks, and get ready for a good session of internet browsing à la Salt & Sail express. Rounding out the links I've loved from the end of September 'til now, welcome to a recap of some fantastic recent finds.

I'm usually a save the best for last kinda gal but I really just can't wait to talk about Lily Melrose's Desk Tour video (I've probably watched it at least once a day since she uploaded it). Her decor sense is flawless — I love the cool b/w vibes with whimsical bits like cacti, the wire gazelle, and the mix-and-match prints everywhere. I have also been obsessed with her moving vlogs and have come to the conclusion that I would like to live her life, sans full-time blogging because obvs. I love advertising. Except for the fact that I seriously considered telling my manager about these genius nap-friendly desks because working at the office until 5 a.m. pre-pitch day is not the business.

I've also been ooh-ing and ahh-ing at Cat Coquillette's amazing prints (the LLYMLRS effect is so real) to brighten up my desk at the office seeing as I spend so much time there. These are also a big part of my time spent fantasizing over my <strike>still</strike> currently non-existent future apartment. At least I've got some inspiration for new blogging backgrounds to keep S&S content fresh while I wait to move into a minimalist winter-white wonderland.

Entertainment-wise I've been completely obsessed with How to Get Away With Murder (pops and I have been hardcore bingeing + our favorite character is Oliver). Though I don't usually keep up with new shows, I did hear something about 'Serial' Podcast being TV-ified and I am very intrigued. In the meantime I'm keeping a to-read book list, and some titles from Smudegness's Teeny Tiny Book Review have recently been added. I adore the way she summed each book up with a quote or a sentence — I'm feeling inspired to write one of these myself!

This is already a monster post, but fitting since it's Halloween season right around the corner eh? I'm not one to go all-out dressing up, but I did really enjoy Peanutizing myself last week. I also resent getting excited about pumpkin everything just because it's October... but really, who could say no to a Pumpkin Pie Mookie? Life's just so much sweeter after coming to terms with the fact that pumpkin spice is October's gift to mankind.

And how very glad am I to live in a world where there are Octobers.Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04862985778144399065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800716126748771640.post-53703426682649801652015-10-02T11:25:00.003-07:002015-10-02T11:25:52.814-07:00Lady Gaga Fame

Every other beauty blogger seems to be digging out her stockpile of Leaves candles from last autumn's BBW sale, but I've been indulging myself in the warm, sweet floral scent of Lady Gaga Fame. The combination of atropa belladonna, tiger orchid, incense, apricot, saffron and honey just make me feel like cozying up indoors as the skies turn gray and the winds cool. I always love a bit of muskiness in my perfume so the notes of incense are right up my alley. Not to mention this badass packaging with the golden claw and black fluid. While it may look a bit intimidating, the scent is actually very subtle and sophisticated, and perfect for everyday wear. What products remind you of fall?

Summer has finally come and gone (yes, even in weather-confused California) and so has the month of September. It's been an enjoyable month overall but here are some of the highlights!

I went all-in when breaking out the darker nails by sporting OPI Mrs. O'Leary's BBQ on my fingertips for a good week or two this month. The brown-toned berry is a statement but really compliments my light-medium skin tone and walks the fine line between winter chic and grunge queen. Perfect.

So as not to overdo it with the dark products already, I've opted to keep up with a more moisturizing, light lip color this month. I re-discovered the YSL Volupté Tint-In-Oil in shade 4 I Rose You in my collection and have been wearing it almost every day. The color is very sheer and basically gives my lips a shiny boost, but the oil formula is super creamy and it smells divine.

On the cheeks the Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Plum Wine has made a comeback now that we've officially (can I say it without jinxing it?!) hit sweater weather. Stippling it on with the Real Techniques Stippling Brush gives the nicest flush of color that's been pairing well with neutral eyes. I've also been loving the subtlety of the Maybelline Fit Me Blush in Light Mauve, as it brings some color back to the face without being a prominent presence so I can highlight other features like eyes or lips. It does a fair job of satisfying my craving for Tarte Exposed blush at a fraction of the price, but I do hope to get my hands on the high-end version soon.

Onto some random favorites, I've been wearing my gold bar necklace and dainty double rings from H&M non-stop all month long. Super simple, very affordable, and surprisingly good quality, these pieces have added that extra touch of "I tried really hard to be a functioning adult" to my work outfits. I've also been obsessing over prints to decorate my wall with (I'm going through a bit of an interiors moment in general, mostly sparked by Lily Melrose's moving vlogs and desk tour). The bunnylope was a recent find at a print studio in Point Reyes and I absolutely love it. A bit of an antlerphile to begin with, I truly believe this is my spirit animal.

As we head into October I'm looking forward to more tea time, cozy socks, and am crazy excited for this calligraphy class I'm planning to take! Hope you all had a happy September and I'd love to hear your favorites from the month!

Hazel eyed girls, soft smoky eye fanatics, and ladies afraid of experimenting with color, listen (er, read?) up! I, a die-hard everyday taupe girl, am here to rave about one of my favorite eyeshadow looks of all time — and it's purple.

The NARS Charade eyeshadow duo is one of the unsung heroes of my makeup stash. My everyday eye tends to be some combination of shimmery taupes and matte beiges, but every once in a while I pull this beaut out and scorn myself for not using it more often. Featuring a neutral, brown-toned satin-matte peach and a soft, hazy matte plum, the colors in this duo are just the right bit of contrasted and perfectly complimentary.

To wear this during the day I apply a wash of the peach all over the lid and gently place the plum in the crease and along the lower lash line for a soft, understated smoky eye. At nighttime I amp it up by deepening the crease and adding some definition with a swish of black liner and tons of mascara. The subtle nuances in color really bring attention to my hazel eyes without sacrificing the effortlessness I strive for in my everyday look. It's also a great color combo for anyone looking to experiment with a bit of color but isn't quite sure where to start.

Everyone says to pair hazel with purple, but I never thought I'd embrace this in my own routine. And now I'm happy to report that I'm head over heels for Charade and finally taking baby steps out of my neutral comfort zone. I'm even hoping to invest in more purple-toned products soon (I'm looking at you, Tartelette palette)! Do you have a favorite NARS duo? I may be looking to treat myself after my next paycheck (hint, hint, wink, wink)... (;
No white after Labor Day? No problem... at least in the denim department! This Autumn/Winter I'm coveting the perfect compromise between summer whites and winter darks — yep, you guessed it, gray skinny jeans. While they might not seem like an essential wardrobe staple, or that exciting in general, they are some of the most versatile bottoms I now proudly own.

I've been quite inspired by Victoria from In The Frow's style lately and channelled her while making this purchase. I love the way she effortlessly styles her gray skinnies with a jumper and trainers on a casual day but adds in some glam with fab sunglasses or a red lipstick, or dresses them up with a blouse and edgy platforms while still keeping it comfy through the legs. Same goes for Kat from With Love From Kat's choice to pair with nude heels! Since they aren't as harsh as black jeans they really soften up an outfit and add extra cozy vibes as the days start to get chillier.

How will I wear my gray jeans this autumn? I'm thinking either with my trusty black BP Trolley Boots and a leather jacket over a white tee and some long silver jewelry or with a denim jacket, white chiffon top and some teal kitten heel pumps, as I'm not quite ready to give up summer. What's your take on gray skinny jeans? I'd love to know!

What I lack in variety in wardrobe (thanks, California weather) I make up for in my expansive nail polish collection... Or so I justify what may just be a polish addiction. It's so easy to change up an outfit or spice up your mood with a new color on the fingertips — and it's always the best seasonal accessory to hop on ever-changing trends! Just one coat of a red and I immediately feel cold-weather ready, and once summer rolls around it's back to the neon pinks.

While we're in the midst of a second round heat-wave right now, I'm still starting to covet more fall-appropriate colors. One of my all-time favorite nail shades to wear this time of year is OPI Berlin There Done That. It's the perfect warm, neutral taupe (girl, you know how much I love a good taupe) that looks modern and sophisticated without going too dark.

I also consider OPI Sprung to be the epitome of an autumn shade, as it's iridescent reddy-bronze color reminds me of dewdrops on fallen leaves and fall-time spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The shimmer comes off a bit like a foil, so it's an awesome pick for someone who likes a little bling (I have it on my toes right now and I'm loving it!!). For a bit more of a subtle look OPI Gouda Gouda Two Shoes is a beautiful soft, muted, beige-y pink for fall. The best part about this one is the gold reflect running throughout. So subtle, but so, so pretty!

Lastly as we try to hang onto the last bits of warm weather, OPI Call Me Gwen-Ever is the perfect transition shade. It's a step down from a neon summer orange, but still juicy and vibrant in what I consider my true pumpkin shade.

What shades are you pulling out for fall? I would love some more autumn inspiration!

Let me just get this out of the way and say it, I hate showering. Yeah yeah, icky human, whatever. It just takes so much damn time out of my day! But I justify my every-other-day (mm, maybe extra on weekends) hair wash with the claim it's healthier for your scalp. And for a girl who suffers from major eczema breakouts at the hairline the less product, blowdrying, and general heat styling the better.

Those in-between days can get a little tricky though. As we all know, dry shampoo has become a staple in every it-girl's haircare routine. A lot of people swear by Batiste (didn't do the trick for me), and everyone knows the Tre Semme one is absolute crap. What I found to be the best volumizing, oil-sucking, general make my hair look manageable product is the Lush No Drought Dry Shampoo.

I started out with a little sample which lasted me ages because a little of this fine powder goes a long way. Application can be a bit of a doozy, but I found putting some in my palm, pinching it between my fingers to sprinkle it into my roots, and then tossing my hair around after rubbing it in works best. It immediately mattifies any extra oiliness and gives lift throughout. Not to mention the citrus scent (very lime-heavy) has grown on me. Since it is a white powder it does need some working in, but who doesn't like a good a head massage? Two birds, one stone!

I doubt I'll ever get through this massive bottle, but maybe by the time I do COLAB dry shampoo will have made it's way across the pond, because I'm super keen on trying it after hearing so many rave reviews! But for now, I'm quite happy with this handy hair helper. What's your go-to dry shampoo?

I spend a lot of time browsing the internet... and I mean a lot. Thanks to some down time at work lately I've come across some cool stuff around the web, so here's a little wrap up of my recent favorite finds!

I absolutely love the textures and muted colors in this Outfit to Room article from Rue Daily. I think I need both the scarf and the gorgeous blanket in my life ASAP.

Piggybacking on the theme of cute rooms, these articles on Living in a Shoebox and Ikea-inspired Small Space Decor provided some helpful hints to give me hope during my desperate SF apartment search (seriously, is there anything better than a bunk bed for $1,800/mo these days?).

No matter where I end up, I have my heart set on getting (perhaps DIY-ing?) this awesome Oliver Bonas Wire Wall Antelope Head to go above my bed.

Onto a major flashback to my '90s childhood — Refinery29 interviewed Lisa Frank and now I'm itching to get my hands on some psychedelic neon leopard notebooks...

And the Polaroid Snap is probably the cutest thing I've seen all week (take that, Instax!!). It'd be the perfect little gadget to snap some artsy shots of a fall wardrobe inspired by The Vault File's Fall Essentials List.

As sweater weather rolls in, accompanied by my good friend Karl the Fog, it's time to start prepping for fall! Transitioning out of summer peaches and super bronzed skin, here are a few products I'm excited to bring back into my routine this upcoming season.

To achieve that quintessential fall I-just-ran-through-a-pumpkin-patch flush I am going to be hardcore dipping into one of my favorite blushes of all time, the Sally Girl blush in Flushed. This stuff is seriously soft, super pigmented, and only $1.99, so there's no reason why it shouldn't be in everyone's makeup bag!

On the eyes I'm really feeling the soft, neutral mattes from the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette or a plummy bronzed lid with a wash of MAC Sable and a ton of mascara.

To compliment either look the Rimmel Kate Moss Lasting Finish Lipstick in 08 would be the perfect mauvey-nude to wear during the day. For crisp fall evenings or to get a sassier day look I love a good dollop of the Revlon Ultra HD Lip Lacquer in Garnet. It's an awesome glossy, muted pinky-magenta that is the perfect color to wear before we really break into the vampy winter reds.

What's going into up your autumn makeup bag?
